Private LessonsI offer private lessons in my shop. Class limit is two students for the Stock Removal class and one at a time for the Forging or Damascus classes. From Start to FinishI teach all phases of knifemaking from start to finish and emphasize free hand grinding. Each student will learn:
Class LengthThe duration of private lessons is really determined by how quickly you learn. My experience has been that it takes two to four days (8-10 hr. each) to do the stock removal portion but this is variable and dependent on personal interest and skill areas of the student. I generally have students make both full and hidden tang knives. Forging and Damascus making take about the same amount of time and again, there are variables. I am glad to break up the days and classes if requested or to cover special interest areas. CollectorsThis is a great way for a collector to get a feel for what goes into making a fine knife and end up owning a blade that he or she made. These lessons are a good way for an aspiring knifemaker to see if knifemaking is really something he or she wants to do. CostI charge $200 per day, per person, and I supply all the tools and materials. Students will need to bring their own protective gear such as safety glasses, work apron and a respirator. Food and LodgingMeals can be taken with my family, or there are 2 or 3 small restaurants in Keenesburg. Lodging is available at the local motel or you can park an RV in the driveway. Keenesburg is a small farm town 36 miles northeast of Denver, on I-76, boasting a booming population of "500 happy people and a few sore heads." We are within 45 minutes of DIA and will gladly pick up anyone there or at the bus or rail station for free. A Belt SanderIf you are really interested in making knives, I strongly suggest that you have a grinder at home already so that you can practice what you learn on your return home. If you don't, I can order a new Bader B3 delivered to your door from the factory at 10% below retail. I have been a distributor for Bader for about ten years and can order everything you need for knife grinding at substantial savings. Having a grinder at home is helpful and will be essential if you continue in knifemaking. It is not, however, a prerequisit for these classes. |
